LiftMaster LA500 Limit Lights Blinking: What It Means

On applicable LiftMaster LA500 systems, blinking SET OPEN or SET CLOSE indicators generally mean that the controller is in limit setup or does not have a complete, valid set of learned limits. The gate should not be returned to normal automatic use until both travel limits are correctly established and tested.

Why a limit may not save

  • The setup sequence was not completed for both directions.
  • A dual-gate primary/secondary configuration is incomplete.
  • An active input or safety condition is interrupting learn mode.
  • The gate or actuator is binding before reaching the intended position.
  • Position, RPM feedback, communication or wiring is not being read correctly.
  • A control board, actuator or identification issue is causing learned values to be rejected.

Information to record

  • The exact LA500 model and control-board generation.
  • Which light blinks and whether it is fast or slow.
  • Which operator moves on a dual system.
  • The step at which the opposite limit begins blinking again.
  • Any diagnostic code displayed after the attempt.

Safety: Limit programming causes the gate to move. Keep the travel and entrapment areas completely clear, and never bypass safety inputs to finish setup.

When to call KDI

KDI can diagnose LA500 single- and dual-gate limit problems, verify the gate moves freely, and check position feedback, wiring and controller setup before relearning travel. Request automatic gate service or call (843) 730-0215.
