If a LiftMaster gate will not open, first determine whether every access device fails or only one device fails. If the keypad works but a remote does not, the gate operator may be fine. If nothing operates the gate, the problem is more likely power, batteries, a controller condition, a mechanical jam or the operator itself.
Start with the command devices
- Try a second authorized remote, keypad code or access device.
- If only one remote fails, replace its battery with the specified type and verify model compatibility before attempting to reprogram it.
- If an entire community entrance is affected, ask whether other residents are experiencing the same problem.
Check power and the gate path
- Confirm that the property has power and check the building breaker or operator disconnect without opening energized equipment.
- Look for storm damage, impact, a sagging swing gate, a slide gate off its track or debris in the travel path.
- Listen for an alarm, clicking, grinding or a motor that runs without moving the gate.
- Record the exact model number and any diagnostic code or flashing indicator.
Safety: Use a manual release only under the procedure for the exact model and only when the gate can be controlled safely. Do not erase limits or work inside an energized control enclosure as a general reset.
When to call KDI
Call when no access device operates the gate, the operator alarms, the gate is heavy or binding, access is blocked, or the fault returns after a permitted owner reset. Request automatic gate service or call (843) 730-0215.
